Understanding Depression

Depression is a common mental disorder. Globally, more than 264 million people of all ages suffer from depression. It is a leading cause of disability worldwide and is a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease.

Depression is different from usual mood fluctuations and short-lived emotional responses to challenges in everyday life. Especially when long-lasting and with moderate or severe intensity, depression may become a serious health condition. It can cause the affected person to suffer greatly and function poorly at work, at school and in the family. At its worst, depression can lead to suicide.

Types and symptoms

Depending on the number and severity of symptoms, a depressive episode can be categorized as mild, moderate or severe.

A key distinction is also made between depression in people who have or do not have a history of manic episodes. Both types of depression can be chronic (i.e. over an extended period) with relapses, especially if they go untreated.

1. Recurrent depressive disorder- this disorder involves repeated depressive episodes. During these episodes, the person experiences depressed mood, loss of interest and enjoyment, and reduced energy leading to diminished activity for at least two weeks. Many people with depression also suffer from anxiety symptoms, disturbed sleep and appetite, and may have feelings of guilt or low self-worth, poor concentration and even symptoms that cannot be explained by a medical diagnosis.

Depending on the number and severity of symptoms, a depressive episode can be categorized as mild, moderate or severe. An individual with a mild depressive episode will have some difficulty in continuing with ordinary work and social activities but will probably not cease to function completely. During a severe depressive episode, it is unlikely that the sufferer will be able to continue with social, work or domestic activities, except to a limited extent.

2. Bipolar affective disorder- this type of depression typically consists of both manic and depressive episodes separated by periods of normal mood. Manic episodes involve elevated or irritable mood, over-activity, pressure of speech, inflated self-esteem and a decreased need for sleep.

3. Post natal depression -Depression that occurs after childbirth. Those who develop postpartum depression are at greater risk of developing major depression later on in life. Symptoms might include insomnia, loss of appetite, intense irritability and difficulty bonding with the baby. Untreated, the condition may last months or longer.

How can Homeopathy help ?

In Homeopathy we treat the person as a whole , taking into account the mind, body. Homeopathy medicines act at a much deeper level making the person healthier and calmer from within, treating the root cause of the illness. Our case taking format itself is designed in such a way that it enables the homeopathic physician to understand the person rather than the disease. Unlike the allopathy medicines which act at a hormonal level and on the nervous system, homeopathy medicines act on every cell of the body.

Depression is not a condition which occurs suddenly. It occurs due to prolonged stress which has occurred and which has a recurrence. Most of the time people will not be able to recognize what is the reason for their depression. It takes time and in depth evaluation by both the person and the physician to recognize the cause of depression.

Simple events in our day to day life , which we feel are small stress if repeated frequently can have an effect on our mind. It need not always be a big life changing event. Stress at work, frequent small quarrels at home, misunderstanding between friends, or working partners etc. its not a single event which causes depression but an event which repeats itself. Homeopathy is such a beautiful science that there are particular medicines for particular difficulties which the person experiences. In homeopathy we do not generalize the situations or conditions. We go to the depth of the situation to understand the problem.

Nirmala Jothi Dr.Pradyuth is a very Good listener I highly recommend this clinic for people suffering from depression. The main requirement as a therapist is patience and doctor Pradyuth is too patient, kind and very cooperative. He listens and gets to the root cause before helping one out. Khatija tul kubra A very responsible, amiable and skilled doctor. He listens so patiently and attentively which is quite rare . It's very hard to find a doctor who actually cares for your well being and gives so much time and attention to get to know the patient. Medicines are quite affordable and effective. It has definitely improved my health . I got a call from Dr. Pradyuth 10 days after my first visit enquiring about how I was doing. I have never met a doctor who actually calls the patient and asks if I am taking the pills regularly. Would recommend anyone to visit if your suffering from depression , anxiety or any other diseases. You will definitely not regret consulting him.
